Pool of the unconscious
SWIM, directed by Andrea James with lead performer Dani Sibosado and writer Ellen Van Neerven.
I designed projections for an immersive story where the worlds consisted of natural waters from Yugumbeh country and the hypereal brightness of summer swimming pools, abstractions of water but shot on country tracing back to pre-colonial sovereignty of water. Many ways of using water, in fear, to atone with indigenous connection to country and finding emotional strength. Dual projections covering the floor and wall of a pale blue tiled swimming pool set, designed by Romanie Harper. The main performer makes a defining journey of their queer identity through competitive swimming in a “sea of white women” and men with ”Tony Abbott vibes”, navigating relationships and finding strength through support from their indigenous elders. In the end, making projections for this theatre work was a poignant balance between austere open light and dark inner pain, reconciling that the place that hurts can also heal you.
