Red transformed by Green: stolen life

Tyrel Dulvarie - The Other Side of Me

I was invited by NT Dance Company to film in East Arnhem Land and make projections for an existing dance work (The Other Side of Me, choreographer Gary Lang) on a young Aboriginal boy stolen by a foster family to England, who took his life in prison. The work was compiled through a collection of letters sent from prison about his grief from never being able to return to his country. I was lucky enough to be taken around cultural centres of Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala by Yolgnu traditional owner, Banula for collecting imagery focussed on dualism of persona, multi-dimensionalism in nature, tidal rhythms and the suffocation of spirit and persona in white society. This work was made largely remotely from the performance team but the trust from these artists made the final stitching of the work completely harmonious. To be lead by those who trust in collaboration is the greatest way to learn about other cultures and each other.
