The idea is to create a series of video 'representations' of performers within their work. It is a distorted collage, or reinterpretation of the performer, with the idea of anamorphism - 1. a drawing presenting a distorted image that appears in natural form under certain conditions, as when viewed at a raking angle or reflected from a curved mirror or 2. a distorted projection or perspective; especially an image distorted in such a way that it becomes visible only when viewed in a special manner. It looks at how film re-describes performance through the entire process, from the lens to the edit. As a documentor I'm conscious of this boundary of manipulation of the image, and whether my experience is also part of the performance work. I'm also portraying a multitude of subjective paths and experiences not just within the performer but also within the mediation of live performance. WHY DISTORT? – What does it prove? That the straight image is no more real than the distorted image. We stare at the straight image to find something of interest, but the façade of the media is too strong. Degenerating the media is kinder to the subject. Distortion harnesses and pinches focal points into a flow of energy.
