Parallel universes are offering insight into our projected futures, cellular cosmologies meeting in confluence to redraw bodies of indigenous knowledge and adopted disguises we use when mind crashed by a mono-cultural state. Each of these projects in the last three months have proposed the deepest and most complex questions for social and artistic practice at the end of 2023 but all in a very positive trajectory. Try to ignore the most painful things we are suffering to project an original sphere, a reformed cognitive space for better futures. Drawing maps with copper wire and reverse tracking the shapes over backgrounds of contemporary architecture meeting restored, polluted industrial environments on Sydney’s western harbours towards Parramatta. An exchange with council on it’s history of environmental management systems and power, these days The Connection is powered by 99kw of Solar Panels. 100% Renewable in reality means, councils committing to 100% renewable energy companies who are making the transition happen in the next 20-30 years. 80% of NSW still currently runs on fossil fuel energy though wind and solar farms are being built as we speak across the regions, the percentages are slowly turning but there is a clean cut optimism in social marketing campaigns promoting utopian visions which I tried to simulate in the works. The first piece shows greater NSW network overlaid onto Canada Bay's degraded and regenerated waterway, the second shows a Western Sydney network overlaid onto a green corporate consciousness of Rhodes and the third shows the Rhodes local network over an immersive consciousness about sustainable energy. The answer was: its endless. A human experiences a place/event for the first time and responds with movement drawing. A collection of 12 light investigations looking at social behaviour, everyday activity, mortal pathways becoming transcendent and existing in multidimensional aspects. The ‘light investigations’ are a collection of performative, conceptual-sensorial phenomena drawn by hand, composited with other surfaces and materials in video that become apparent through the way light hits them. Minimalism being the result of modernism, living amongst the comfort of functional urban systems… it seems needless to make animations from these forms because it mostly refers to the industry which created it. To de-functionize an object gives it some potential for animation, so often that was my aim. In contrast, photographing natural forms offer an understanding of the systems which operate on multiple levels - chemical, physically unique, organic, decompositional and part of a life cycle. Lots of events, talks and a street party. This is the second time projecting on hardened second hand clothing used as an expressionist canvas but the balance is sought between what is lost between image and surface and the gratuity of the visual depiction of terror. Sometimes it is what becomes invisible on the distorted canvas that provides its weight and poetics. The festival theme of “Radical Softness” gave validation to working subterraneously, looking for sense in place and community and using sensitivity as a mode of radical change amongst politics' of terror and the earth throwing us from its cradle.
<p class="p2" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15px;">

<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">And this week Heartland, a new album was launched at the Darwin Festival 2022 with my accompanying 55 minute amorphous patterning of natural spaces and objects. font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Taking time out at BigCi in February (Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives) to work on refined animation of natural forms, developing the concept of a fool's paradise by taking objects from their natural habitat and turning them into anthropomorphic, fantasy reformations which still tell something of their source, the stories of natural cycles and systems but through a colonised, appropriated lens. A child plays with nature fictions but also that kind of naivety can be destructive. I want to show the deformation which results from complacency - hybrid creatures evolve but at the expense of a destabilised ecosystem - devolving only in relation to our human needs but not necessarily for the post human world. Microbial and bacterial activity continue in a different form as the relational anthropocene vanishes.
<p class="p1" style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I made seven photographic collages and nine video animations using templates of environment from the Wollemi National Park as worlds for new, isolated, object creatures. I also projected these objects onto trees and rocks outdoors to make 3D collage and documented them, showing virtual-meeting-physical and added a small amount of light and texta drawing into the mix.
<p class="p2" style="color: #dca10d; It was my first international project since Covid and a very refreshing collaboration, seeing again through the world’s eyes and a reminder that making large scale live art works is pure hard work! Also the challenge of thinking conceptually about the state of another country I visited six years ago, director Kim Ju-Hong suggested I manipulate images from nature that were universal to represent contemporary Korea.

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; There are essential processes and they are different for each artist. People see the end result but don’t know what the journey to that point was, though they may sense it. What is always aimed for is the opening flower coming from points of madness to sanity, whilst still communicating the madness. The pathways aiming towards that can be vastly different, effortless and blissful or torturous and scarring, this work isn’t finished, the questions are still out there. We tried to make fabric out of the ephemera but it was like the trust of holding a snake, trying not to get bitten. This is the sixth development of At the End of the Land (Too Close to the Sun), a complex beastly work of spirit photography, holography, and performance of dreams in a state of seance. Both projects interlinked through a state of cognitive dissonance; Bovine Heart focussing on meat eating whilst loving the soul of animals and Sonic Sites being an epic artistic drive to achieve a vision against the odds of time, weather and environment.

Sonic Sites was a Bundanon Trust commissioned work with Ensemble Offspring's composers collaborating with Nowra local music students to elicit deeper understandings and connections to nature. A carefully considered, poetic solo work set to a backdrop of a butcher's cool room, on which I projected subconscious imagery of her empathetically embodying cows she has been acquainted with. I had the privilege of working with dancers Jasmin Sheppard and Kaine Sultan Babij on their personal stories of assimilation and reflections of home in Takalaka and Arrende country. Both have extensive history with Bangarra and are now establishing their own choreographic languages with other media; evocative voice overs, highly detailed props and video projection. We transformed Campbelltown Art Centre's open stage into a greyed-out, projection scrimmed environment for the sake of bringing the focus right in to a sensitive listening and watching of personal stories told abstractly through sound, movement and image. It was a three projector setup; one for the lyrebird costume, one for the floor and one cyclorama. With incredible sound design by Naretha Williams and light by Karen Norris this was an excellent team to bring about the required alchemy to evoke the deep sense of home-longing and re-finding oneself through the mirages of every day illusions.

Sydney Festival, Campbelltown Arts Centre, 19-23rd Jan 2021

https://www.sydneyfestival.org.au/events/complication-of-lyrebirds

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29193416.post-18960890803300229562021-01-01T16:30:00.009+11:002021-05-24T10:14:08.264+10:00Simulated Rock Picnic

Conceived by performance maker Alan Schacher with WeiZen Ho, Katia Molino, Philip Mills and others, SKELTER SHELTER was a video experiment made with the assistance of the Blue Mountains City of Arts Trust exploring the picnic rock shelters in Katoomba which were built and designed by Tom Adam in the 1930's. PANIC EMBRACE, made for BLIK BLIK 2020 festival in the Czech Republic metamorphosed into a 360VR work during the lockdown (see link below) after a successful installation in DEPO2015 Pilsen. It was made by projecting onto a collection of eight suspended frames of disassembled pieces of clothing in a 10 metre wide array to increase dimensional perception of each item being affected by the superimposition of chaotic, monochromatic drawings.

The drawings were made with the sense of waking and sleeping brain cycles and repatriation, like a person passing through life threatening experiences, possibly dying or being transformed and coming out the other side. They are made in the liminal state of brief hesitation, realising one's life is at stake. From the initial RFS command during the bushfires in NSW "stay and fight or leave now", seeing people driving through walls of flames bleeding into a global Coronavirus pandemic, suddenly everyone is faced with mortality, not just refugees and those fleeing terror.
A collaboration with Big hArt, Australia's large scale, nomadic community arts company, to insert skate culture into the Barangaroo Arts Precinct in Sydney. A hotspot for general audiences, especially around Vivid Sydney, this event has been balanced by indigenous recognition through projects such as Wellama, (meaning 'to come back') a large outdoor audio visual work set in this location described as 'ground zero' for European invasion. For the skate community it is a cross wiring of the sophisticated underground culture with the most corporate end of town and an opportunity to fertilise other similar sponsored events around the world such as the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
This is a mock-up set with a 3 projector immersive coverage on the floor, ramps and walls and utilises infra red motion tracking (Jordan East), motion graphics (Benjamin Ducroz) and environmental thematics by myself. All audio is triggered from the space though skateboards, ramps and rails. Sound also triggers lighting and video effects. Every event is presented differently and is prepared with minimal tech time in darkness and to the best of our ability, vj'd on the fly.

My first project with Legs on the Wall is a big one: Man with the Iron Neck, a project about indigenous suicide, developed over 2 years in four stages. The projections are split over an 18m x 5m curved projection cyclorama in 4K, using shadow acting, aerial choreography and puppetry, drone footage, photographic collage and water animation. The collaboration with set designer Joey Ruigrok van der Verven incorporates a 7 metre gum tree and a flying hills hoist which is used to propel aerial performers from and adding dynamic three dimensionality to the space. It is a complete theatre work written by Ursula Yovich based on a concept by co-director, Josh Bond who has been working on the idea for over four years. It is fantastic to be working on something well supported and developed - I had eight weeks to make the projections, with extra time on the tour for technical installation and adjustments. It is a great example of theatre that brings all the elements together, including hyper visual choreography by Gavin Robins and exquisite lighting by Matt Marshall.
This piece attempts to depict the pre-cognitive state of a child in utero, seeing “light for the first time”. The stages of being before self-reflexivity, perceiving colours and movement as a unified (non-Cartesian) experience, perhaps ultimately phenomenological without distinction of one's own body from the stimuli, pure, sensory immersion. I worked on developing stages of cognition after the very first optical receptions, proposing that once we see, we then start to perceive, and sense becomes ‘feeling’. Made only with a Leica M digital camera, physical lens distortions and real time movement. This labyrinthine work is based on the book The Obscene Madame D by Brazilian author Hilda Hilst and adapted by Carlos Gomes (Theatre Kantanka) performed by Katia Molino. Madame D stands in the centre of an audience and fragments outwards in projections on broken walls. We are one moment inside her body, then with her hiding under the stairs, then in a caffeine induced reverie of her dead husband, scenes being led by his voice inside her head. The memory simulacra is implanted into our heads via headphones (<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">binaural audio recordings by Gail Priest). A meta-performance shifting between her introverted presence underneath tables and behind curtains and chaotic aggression behind nightmare masks, the performance is delivered in the round, making us question how much we exist in-and-to the world, when we are consumed by loneliness and insanity. Animated Projections and video shadow play in collaboration with Carlos Gomes.
Without the faculty of sight the botanical world grows and lives alongside us with an unheard voice. Annette Tesoriero directs the multi-dimensional performance of ten participants over the age of 60 in a work centred on listening and allowing space for acoustic relations with ourselves and each other. The character of a variety of trees in the Shoalhaven River area metaphorically held this knowing silence. Some participants had a favourite tree, some had a favourite forest to walk in and others used trees to remember, or to gift as new beginnings. The associative environment and the uniqueness of the human mind amongst its labyrinth was a joy to project, with pre-made films 7 metres high on a square format cyclorama, to observe the rhythmic visual forms interrelating with performers' brief vignettes of voice and simple movement.
Heavy material, performed with unrelenting emotion, the Sound of Waiting was a poignant, magic-realist work on refugee experience, evoking the terror of homeland and the battle against the odds on a fatal approach to Australia. Written by Mary-Anne Butler and directed by Suzanne Periera this work explored the strength of the will to survive and how far the human spirit will extend when there is no alternative option. It was a privilege to be part of a work of such political importance which reached large audiences with great reviews. It was my first endeavour with Darlinghurst Theatre in their process of intense psychological questioning of the line between the actor and reality particularly for lead actor and child refugee, Reza Momenzada.
The projection design was a single front projection onto a semi-circular, retracting tule curtain with floating panels of grey gauze behind.
After a few weeks of compositing process, reassembling abstract photographic elements from unidentified places to Juan Felipe Waller's persuasive composition Detone/Retune in different combinations, different quantities, with varying velocity and density the string of sonic episodes have become a space in themselves without need for interrelation or context. A certain amount, moving at what speed, at what point in time and in what proportional relationship to its neighbouring elements, recurs, familiar, a language. Complimentarily, in image, each element is not actual but an image simulating an element in combination with sounds, simulated movements built in a composition like a waiting residual sea, waves rising debris to the surface, but halting before surface emergence. Juan Felipe Waller's composition set was a video-generative task for me not unlike a 2D board game performed by Sydney's Ensemble Offspring. It was evidence of sound art defying commodifiable emergent value leaving the percussive musicians an opportunity for a rearrangement of the pure object of sounds. Non-hierarchical, non-narrative music: an exercise in resistance..
After a tour with Back to Back Theatre to Vienna/Amsterdam and a detour to Budapest - the return to Australia and its bigotry - oh the disappointment, yet reason to protest. At Articulate Space Leichhardt as part of De Quincey Company's installation performance event PLATFORM 2017 and SNO Gallery I showed some light tracing works which re-traced memories of the Terror Museum in Budapest and an opening night in Vienna followed by the state of mind returning to Australia: forward work, intersected by destabilising compromise resulting in a backwards trajectory.
